1. Supercritical Fluids in Organic Synthesis

Supercritical fluids are materials in a state above their critical temperature and critical pressure. They are promising alternatives for the conventional solvents used in organic synthesis as solubility, mass transfer, solvent strength, reaction kinetic can be easily manipulated by relatively small changes in operating pressure and temperature.

2. Most intriguing paper of 1Q-2003

"Asymmetric Synthesis with Chiral Cyclic Phosphorus Auxiliaries" published in issue 18 (2002) of SYNTHESIS was the "Most Intriguing" paper to be made available in the first quarter of 2003. CAS scientists characterize a document as "intriguing" if "it contains new, novel or trend-setting scientific research that is likely to be of growing interest over time".

3. Feature Article of Tetrahedron Letters

Iterative synthesis of the ABCDEF-ring system of yessotoxin and adriatoxin Yuji Mori, Toyohisa Takase and Ryoji Noyori, 44 (11)

5. Molecules of the Month (June 2003)

Luminol: reacts with the oxygen-carrying proteins in red blood cells, used at crime scenes where traces of blood can be invisible to the naked eye.

Alpha-tocopherol: Vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects your cells from free radical damage and maintains red blood cells

Octocrylene: an emollient, water-resistant molecule that helps protect your skin from UVB and UVA rays

10. Directory of Organic Chemistry Research

In the fall of 2003, a new database containing all relevant information about academic organic chemistry research worldwide will be launched. Its main users will be R&D managers from pharmaceutical and biotech companies looking for a specific expertise or research collaboration. If you are active in synthetic organic chemistry research, you can submit the information for evaluation for a free inclusion at http://organicworldwide.net/directory/addedit.html
