There is no general consensus how to classify chemical information sources in primary, secondary and tertiary literature. Usually, following classification is used:

Secondary Sources
Repackaged and better organized information
- Reviews
- Monographs
- Dictionaries, reference works, book series and encyclopedia.
- Abstracts and indexes
- Current awareness tools
- Trade catalogues
- Tertiary Sources
Guides to primary and secondary literature.
