Overview

There is no general consensus how to classify chemical information sources in primary, secondary and tertiary literature. Usually, following classification is used:
  • Primary Sources
    The 'original' literature.

    • Articles in (electronic) journals
    • Patents
    • Conference proceedings
    • Dissertations and theses
    • Technical reports

  • Secondary Sources
    Repackaged and better organized information

    • Reviews
    • Monographs
    • Dictionaries, reference works, book series and encyclopedia.
    • Abstracts and indexes
    • Current awareness tools
    • Trade catalogues

  • Tertiary Sources
    Guides to primary and secondary literature.
