1. Vibrational Circular Dichroism

Due to the ease of sample preparation and time to final results, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) has emerged as a powerful new tool for the a priori determination of the absolute configuration of chiral molecules.

2. Molecules of the Month (July 2004)

Ethanolamine: viscous compound which is commonly found in biological tissues, but also has numerous industrial applications.

Antimony trisulfide : produces white glittery stars in fireworks.

Benzocaine: a topical anesthetic and common ingredient in sunburn remedies and first aid creams.

Carvone: both enantiomers have typically different "smelling" characteristics.

Citronellal: gives citronella candles their distinctive lemony odor.

3. Upcoming Organic Synthesis Conferences (August 2004)

The 7th IUPAC International Conference on Heteroatom Chemistry (ICHAC-7)
August 20-25, 2004; China

XVIIIth International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (ISMC)
August 15-19, 2004; Denmark
