1. Membrane Separation in Organic Synthesis

Organic chemists are often confronted with tedious separations. In addition to the conventional techniques (destillation, liquid-liquid extraction, chromatography, etc.), membranes can sometimes offer a convenient solution to the separation problem.

2. Molecules of the Month (May 2004)

Benzene: the "mother" of aromatic compounds.

Coronene: Aromatic molecule consisting of 7 benzene rings.

Eugenol: used in perfumes and mouthwashes, but also as an insect attractant and a dental analgesic.

Merbromin: a bright red antiseptic (trade name mercurochrome), but not often used for that purpose anymore.
