2. Molecules of the Month (October 2004)

9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene: a dye, used in light sticks, which provides a ghostly green glow.

Camphor: pungent white crystalline substance, readily absorbed through the skin. It produces a warm sensation and a slight local anesthesia.

Cholesterol: strengthens cell walls, helps the body digest fat, and serves as a building block for hormones.

Zingerone: gives ginger a "hot" taste.

3. Upcoming Organic Synthesis Conferences (November 2004)

8th Electronic Conference on Synthetic Organic Chemistry
November 01-30, Internet

CHI’s Diversity-Oriented Synthesis
November 09-10, USA

Selectivity and ligand Design in Transition Metal Catalysed Synthesis November 10, United Kingdom

4. New edition of Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry

A draft new edition of Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry (the IUPAC "Blue Book") has been issued for public review by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. This new edition, which supersedes both the 1979 Blue Book and the 1993 Guide to IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Compounds, represents a major new development in IUPAC nomenclature recommendations. Rather than recommend only a single name for each structure, IUPAC has now developed rules for assigning Preferred IUPAC Names (PINs).

5. Carbocation Chemistry
George A. Olah (Editor), G. K. Surya Prakash (Editor), ISBN: 0-471-28490-4, 393 pages, October 2004

Carbocations are the key intermediates in a wide range of acid-catalyzed organic synthetic reactions. This book covers synthesis, mechanism, and spectral studies related to carbocation chemistry along with insights into near- and far-term developments and practical applications.
