Media Watch is a new addition to the Chemo-Philia web site, used for comment on chemical topics reported by the media and where necessary, to put them into perspective and emphasise their value.
2. Molecules of the Month (January 2005) Monosodium glutamate (MSG): salt of the amino acid glutamic acid, used as a flavor enhancer in foods. Bullvalene: compound with an intriguing structure (constantly changing, can take on any of 1.2 million arrangements) Carboplatin: alkylating agent used to treat ovarian and lung cancers. CLD-1: nonlinear optical chromophore, used in making electro-optic polymers. Arsine: A poisonous gas that was an important molecule in the history of forensic science. http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/Chemistry/MOTM/motm.htm Lacosamide: an NMDA glycine-site antagonist in development for both epilepsy and neuropathic pain. http://www.prous.com/mom/mom.asp 3. Upcoming Organic Synthesis Conferences (February 2005) 6th
Annual Florida Heterocyclic Conference ZINC is a free database of commercially-available compounds for virtual screening. It contains over 2.7 million compounds in ready-to-dock, 3D formats (SMILES, mol2, 3D SDF, and DOCK flexibase). A Web-based query tool incorporating a molecular drawing interface enables the database to be searched and browsed and subsets to be created. http://zinc.docking.org5. Dead Ends and Detours : Direct Ways to Successful Total Synthesis
The current available chemical information is almost always based on successful reactions. However, a lot of valuable information is also hidden in reactions that do not work as expected. This book explains the most encountered problems and recommend ways out of dilemmas such as "problems at the start and end of a synthesis", "difficult and unexpected reactivities of functional groups" and "problems due to steric properties".
