After a 12-year effort, chemists achieve total synthesis of the ciguatoxin called CTX3C, a molecule with 30 stereogenic centers and 13 rings ranging in size from five to nine members. 2. Molecules of the Month (November 2005) Guaifenesin: an expectorant found in over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. Bisabolol: helps administer active pharmaceutical ingredients transdermally by enhancing skin penetration. Bismuth Subsalicylate: used to relieve the symptoms of an upset stomach. Carbon Monoxide: a toxic, colourless and odourless gas. It results from incomplete oxidation of carbon in combustion. http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/Chemistry/MOTM/motm.htm Oseltamivir Phosphate (TamifluŽ): an oral anti-viral drug for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza. http://www.prous.com/molecules/default.asp?ID=141 3. Upcoming Organic Synthesis Conferences (December 2005) Catalysis
and Biocatalysis in Green Chemistry 4. Directory of Graduate Research web DGRweb, the searchable, online version of the DGR is now available free of charge. Search for faculty includes specific research area, academic rank, gender, and state, and the search results produce complete contact information for faculty including direct links to faculty email addresses and web pages, when provided. The query "Organic Chemistry" returns 940 records. The whole range of the functionalization of CH-bonds is presented. Topics span modern catalysts for Friedel-Crafts type reactions to transition metal catalysts for the oxofunctionalization, via new methods for radicalic halogenation to domino processes by catalytic ortho metalation.
