1. Survey of Molecular Modelling Programs This list concentrates on programs for which the source code is available in some form. http://www-jmg.ch.cam.ac.uk/CIL/cil_v11n6.html 2. Molecules of the Month (January 2006) Levoglucosenone: a chiral building block easily available from renewable resources (pyrolysis of cellulose). Crocetin: dye molecule that gives saffron, the most expensive spice in the world, its rich yellow color. Isoflavone: a plant estrogen, found chiefly in soybeans. Metronidazole: an antibiotic used to fight anaerobic bacteria and parasites like giardia. Tacrine: an oral medication used to treat patients with Alzheimer's disease. Batrachotoxin: the poison found on the skin of Amazonian frogs. http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/Chemistry/MOTM/motm.htm Tramiprosate: an antiamyloidogenic agent, in phase III trials for the oral treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's type dementia. http://www.prous.com/molecules/default.asp?ID=143 3. Upcoming Organic Synthesis Conferences (February 2006) MedChem Europe 2006 The very first issue of the new journal "ChemMedChem" is now available online. This book looks at new ways of tackling the problem of separating reaction products from homogeneous catalytic solutions. The new processes involve low leaching supported catalysts, soluble supports such as polymers and dendrimers and unusual solvents such as water, fluorinated organics, ionic liquids and supercritical fluids. |
