1. OSRA: Optical Structure Recognition

OSRA is a utility designed to convert graphical representations of chemical structures, as they appear in journal articles, patent documents, textbooks, etc., into SMILES. It can read over 90 graphical formats (including GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, PS etc.).

2. Molecules of the Month (July and August 2007)

Imidazolidinyl Urea: used to control the growth of gram-negative bacteria in many cosmetics products.

Octane: a hydrocarbon chain of 8 carbons.

Loperamide (Imodium): a piperidine derivative that alleviates diarrhea symptoms.

Carbamide Peroxide: combination of urea and hydrogen peroxide that is widely used at low concentrations (~10%) to whiten teeth.

Tamoxifen: the key drug for treating breast cancer for decades.

Miconazole: widely used to treat yeast infections.

Carbon Nanotubes: tubes of pure carbon a few nanometers in diameter and up to 2 cm long.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: surfactant that can be found in shampoos, toothpastes, face wash, and many other toiletries.
